Solvent Extraction Plant

In 2013, Lester Franks were contracted to perform survey and engineering design works for the replacement of a fire water system for a solvent extraction plant located in South Australia’s far north. Over the years the existing fire water system had degraded to such an extent that the client had elected for a like-for-like replacement of all fire services throughout the plant. Due to the volatile nature of the plant with no hot-work permitted it was required that the replacement system be prefabricated offsite and then installed within a short leadtime to interface seamlessly with existing infrastructure. Lester Franks unique blend of both surveying and engineering expertise meant the full project was able to be executed in one place. Scanning, 3D design, isometrics and fabrication drawing production were all taken care of in-house, eliminating the need to contract more than one service and then coordinate the various works. Braving one of the hottest heatwaves on record, the survey crew were able to quickly and safely capture every detail of the solvent extraction plant within a tight timeframe of just two days using a terrestrial 3D laser scanner accurate to within +/-2mm.

The resultant dataset of over 200 individual 3D scan locations acquired from every conceivable vantage point resulted in a dense 3D point cloud that enabled Lester Franks engineers to successfully extract the as-built conditions of over 2000 metres of fire pipe ranging in size from 200NB down to 25NB. Having an accurate as-built point cloud enabled Lester Franks to redesign all fire services in context to ensure a clash-free design and the ability to re-use existing infrastructure where appropriate. Fully-parametric design software allowed us to work with library items and structure parts hierarchically within assemblies to produce both 3D assemblies, isometric and fabrication drawings that conform to ISO and client specific standards. Due to the parametric nature of the modelling pipeline, If any design parameters changed during the project, Lester Franks engineers were able to quickly apply updates from part through assembly level and any associated drawings ensuring a fast and efficient turnaround on all design changes.
